Body and Soul--A Wellness Program for African Americans

Body & Soul is a wellness program established for African American churches. The purpose of this program is to promote healthy choices when it comes to food. It was initiated by the American Cancer Society and the National Cancer Institute in collaboration with Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

This program was started basically because the American Cancer Society realized that it was important to call attention to the fact that healthy eating habits play an important roll in reducing the risk of cancer. This organization also feels that by keeping weight to its proper proportion and having a healthy diet, heart diseases, diabetes, and other chronic health problems can be lowered.

It is felt by this program, that in today’s lifestyle, people are relying too much on convenience food which does not always contain the necessary vitamins that can maintain a healthy body.
